Drinking Salvia Divinorum
Mazatec shamans reportedly crush the leaves
to extract the leaf juices, which they then drink as an infusion (usually
mixed with water), using 20 (about 50g) to 80 (about 200g) or more pairs of
fresh leaves to induce visions.
Chewing Salvia Divinorum
The traditional Mazatec method of chewing the leaves may also be
employed. However, salvinorin A is generally considered to be inactive when
simply ingested, as the chemical is effectively deactivated by the
gastrointestinal system. Therefore, the 'quid' of leaves is held in the
mouth as long as possible in order to facilitate absorption of the active
constituents through the oral mucosa. Chewing consumes more of the plant
than smoking, though produces a longer-lasting experience.

Smoking Salvia Divinorum
Most people find it difficult to obtain a satisfactory level of effects
when smoking salvia divinorum. Usually this is because of improper smoking
technique and/or low sensitivity to salvinorin A.
Salvinorin A is rapidly metabolized in the body. Due to this, the full
dose must be properly ingested within a three minute period.
If the dose is smoked too slowly, the salvinorin A will be metabolized
faster than it is ingested.
The dosage and effects listed below only occur using proper smoking
technique.
- All smoke must be inhaled without any being wasted to the
environment.
- A water pipe must be used.
- The pipe stem and screen must not be clogged with residue from
previous use.
- Very high temperature must be used in order to vaporize salvinorin
A.
- A butane torch lighter must be used.
- The flame of the butane torch lighter must be in full contact
with the leaf the entire time smoke is being created.
- The full dosage must be ingested with several slow and deep
inhalations.
- Each inhalation must be held for at least 20 seconds.
- Rest time between inhalation must not exceed 5 seconds.
- All inhalations must be completed within a 3 minute period.
